Honi the Circle Drawer

Here is an interesting piece of evidence that backs up the Book of Remembrance series.  That is, if one needs evidence.

In the Book of Remembrance of Achee, on page 240, or in 1 Achee 6: 105, it states, “And it came to pass, after some few years went by, that a man called Honi, who was a circle drawer and who was the father of Elizabeth, the mother of John, gave his property at Secacah, with an orchard and dwelling, to the Church, and it was near the cleft of Moses at Secacah.”

The Jewish Virtual Library has an interesting article about a man named Honi who donated his orchard to a group called the Yahad. The following is a quote from the article: “Recently, an ostracon (a potsherd with writing), with several lines of Hebrew script, was found at Qumran. It is a contract in which a man named Honi bestows his possessions, including a building, an olive and a fig orchard, to a group called Yahad (Hebrew, together).”

The article is about Qumran. The quote focuses more on identifying the people who lived there rather than on the man named Honi. The ostracon provides valuable information because it helps to identify the group that inhabited Qumran. It specifically mentions the “yahad,” which is very likely the group that thrived in the area, as other ancient writings connect the yahad with the Essenes. You can read the article here.
